On the Road in New York-ICFF, Art & Great Food

This year my birthday coincided with Design Week so I thought what the heck, it's time for another On the Road episode, this time to the Big Apple for ICFF.  The International Contemporary Furniture Fair was held at the Jacob K. Javits Center May 20-23 and is known as the North American platform for Luxury International Design showcasing the latest in exclusive interiors, contemporary design and high-end furniture.   However, it's much more than furniture. Naturally, I wanted to home in on the latest and greatest for the kitchen and bath. Read on to see my discoveries.

ICFF New York

I found lots of beautiful plumbing fixture booths featuring all types of sculptural free standing tubs and faucets in the widest variety of metal finishes ever!  Admittedly the innovative furniture was the star of the show with an emphasis on bentwood designs and mid-century modern styling.  I also loved the "International aspect and one of my favorite sections was the Hand Made in Germany booth.  There was a lot of Bauhaus inspired design and I especially loved a minimalist work center.  So clever! Push play and you'll see what I found at the show.

At the same time another show, Wanted Design, was happening right down the street in the Terminal Stores located in an up and coming area by the waterfront.  The venue was old warehouse chic and the show was even younger and edgier than the main event at ICFF. There was a global focus here as well.

I found the Mexican contingent filled with creative and visionary youth.  There was product design, jewelry, furniture and even a line of bar ware based on Mexican cocktails made out of sustainable materials! That's quite specific and remarkable, don't you think? For now, these are one of a kind but I think it's a testament to creative thinking in the future.

Wanted Design was also the venue for Modenus Talks sponsored by Lixil and hosted by Modenus and Design Milk.  This regular series of talks is held in different locations usually in conjunction with trade events. They are always so informative and relevant.  The one we attended was Sustaining the Sustainable Home moderated by Modenus Media CEO Veronika Miller and featuring materials expert Grace Jeffers. It's always great to have more knowledge about the materials I am specifying and to educate the public about  safety and sourcing. Do you know the number one thing you can do to reduce pollution in the home? I'll tell you because you'll never guess,  It's removing your shoes at the front door.  Your shoes track in not only dirt but also carbon monoxide! Who knew? Honestly even though some really relevant information was shared it was also very scary.

If you know me you know that no trip to NY is complete without an "art fix". My savvy New Yorker sister and brother-in-law suggested the Noguchi Museum which did not disappoint. Noguchi was a stone sculptor among other things. He's also famous for those fabulous paper lamps. It was very inspiring and I even bought the T-shirt. I'll be making another video about my Noguchi Museum visit.  Subscribe below and stay tuned.  Part two of the art experience was The Museum Of Art & Design which is a satisfying combination of craft and fine art.  This was my second visit and I must say my favorite part is the sixth floor where you can see and talk to artists in residence. It was quiet on this rainy afternoon but I did meet textile artist Emily Oliveira.

.All in all it was a great trip topped off by a birthday dinner courtesy of my dear sister and brother in law at Shuka in the Village. OMG what an amazing feast!  Executive chef  Ayesha Nurdjaja  has a knack for flavorful combinations which feel Middle Eastern to me and are described as Eastern Mediterranean. The service was top notch too, even though it was packed for a Tuesday evening.  Maybe everyone knew it was my birthday ;) Back to work now but at least I have some great memories to savor.

KBIS2017 Part II- Color Splash!

This is Part II of my KBIS2017 recap.  You can find Part I  here.

If you've read part one you know that I was off meeting old and new friends earlier this month at our big annual trade show known as KBIS2017.  One of the best perks of being on Modenus Blog Tour is always the people.  What a huge source of friends this whole blog adventure has been for me!  Now back to the trends you need to know.

BlogTourKBIS, Modenus

One of the huge trends at the recent Kitchen & Bath Show (KBIS2017)  in Orlando was bold brilliant color. I saw bright color across all product lines including cabinets, appliances and even faucets.  Cabinet Manufacturer Wellborn was no exception.  This vibrant  green was a big hit and showcases their custom color options.   The Color Inspire program offers a broad selection of hues from Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, and Valspar. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

Color was also the star of the show for me at Metrie, North America's largest solid wood and MDF moulding company.  These stunning pink doors are a part of their Then & Now Finishing Collections.  This is actually a great concept that allows you to take a boring space and make it sing with character.  They have curated perfectly coordinated mouldings and interior doors to create "the look".  The styles range from the cutting edge "Fashion Forward", to girly "French Curves", to Minimalism with "Pretty Simple".  There are even a few more.  It's an awesome option for designers as it saves time spent hunting for the right crown to go with the perfect base board etc.  It's a one stop shop for  beautiful millwork and moulding details.

Just think of the chic "chick pad" you could create with Metrie...and then there were shoes.  I'm sorry my attention wanders sometimes.  Who can blame me for loving these shoes worn by Christine DaCosta aka Glamamama.

Grohe,Essence semi pro faucet, KBIS2017

I've got more color!  Check out these faucets by Grohe.  This is the Essence Semi Pro Faucet, available April 2017.  Notice the extended spout for added convenience in the kitchen.  The display is showing limited edition brightly colored silicon hoses. Change your mind, change your faucet, just like a chameleon!

American Standard exhibited this smart faucet that actually measures water for you. Just think, it’s easy, accurate and environmentally friendly.  Turn the dial and you get the perfect amount every time.  So simple. Kudos to the team at American Standard for thinking of it.  Speaking of good ideas, what could be better than a self cleaning toilet? The ActiClean toilet features a turbo type flush system that they call VorMax, with a fully integrated self-cleaning system. The CleanCurveRim omits that rim cavity and holes inside the bowl where dirt gets trapped and EverClean antimicrobial surface helps everything stay clean longer.  Egaads!! I'm just the messenger but it's a good thing.  I'm all for minimal toilet cleaning time.

Modulus, DXV,KBIS2017,BlogTourKBIS

Another American Standard company, the luxury line DXV showed their Modulus line for the bath.  I loved the sensuous sculptural line of these vanity tops BUT how cool is this tray? it fits perfectly on the top and then tucks away in it’s own spot underneath when you’re done. Voilá!

Guess what folks? I've got more. Stay tuned for KBIS III -Just a hint, it has to do with rhino poop and a surprise in the shower (but not together)

The New Look of Luxury at DCOTA

Every now and then I like to get out and about and mingle with the peeps in my industry.  Last week I ventured a little outside of the bounds of strictly kitchen and bath design to experience The New Look of Luxury event held at the Design Center of the Americas (DCOTA).2016-04-07_225538859_89605_iOSSuffice to say I was not disappointed.  DCOTA is also home to luxury cabinet superstars SieMatic and Poggenphol.  They were not open for this cocktail hour event but it was fun just to peek in the windows!Siematic at DCOTA2016-04-07_222519377_BC49C_iOSAnd then there's PoggenpohlRefreshments were served to compliment the visual yumminess! High design even in this Elit vodka bottle by sponsor Stolichnaya.Artful vodka...First stop, Inside The Art of Craftsmanship.  THESE DOORS! OMG, stunning in both scale and creativity.  You would have to have just the right space for one of these, preferably BIG.  Surprisingly there is not much info out there on this Florida based company.  Suffice to say it’s very exclusive… I started snapping pics with wild abandon before I noticed the “no photography” signs. The Many Facets of Custom Cupboards

Who says the art of printing is dead? You may be devouring novels on your Kindle but printing is very much alive at Custom Cupboards.  Their Facets program allows you to bring a new level of personalization to your kitchen, bath or anywhere you have cabinets through digital printing. Custom Cupboards FacetsWith Facets you can  have a truly artful kitchen enhanced with your own original artwork or photography.  If you can dream it they can do it.  Just remember you can't reproduce work that is copyrighted.  That is a no no, but you knew that, yes?Custom Cupboards FacetsMael Hernandez, President of this Wichita Kansas based company, was quoted in the Wichita Business Journal as saying,“It’s all about the trend in personalization. We think this is going to change the cabinet industry. It’s very exciting for us.”Custom Cupboards FacetsCustom Cupboards uses patent pending digital printing technology to stylize cabinet fronts with textures, patterns, art, photography and even typography.Custom Cupboards FacetsWhat do you think? Remember it's just an accent, doesn't have to be on every cabinet. In fact, less is definitely more in this case.  You're creating a focal point which gets diluted when over done.  In case you're wondering, Facets would add about 15% to the cost of an average 13 cabinet, L-shaped kitchen if you did it on say three doors.  If you'd like to explore adding a new "facet" to your kitchen, I'd love to help you do it!

An Off-The-Cuff Art Table

I think all of you know I'm a nut about art.  Some of you may know that my particular passion of late is encaustic art.  This particular type of painting is hot, literally.  It's painting with beeswax, resin and pigments and you can get the full scoop here.  Last year I had the pleasure of attending the 7th International Encaustic Conference in Provincetown Mass.  You will find pics from that trip here scroll down to "Encaustic Boy".encaustic art by Gloria Graham Sollecito  Anyway, I digress.  What I really wanted to show you is this cool table that Pat in the shop at Brendan Donovan Furniture & Cabinet Co. made for me.  I gave him the exact height I needed to work standing up.  It has a shelf below for storage and casters so I can move it where I want it.  He made it out of leftover bamboo and I didn't even finish it as I figured it would just end up covered in paint anyway.   I realize not every one has "a Pat" so let me tell you about a website I just discovered through the tech whiz Eric Schimelpfenig of SketchThis.net .  It's called Open Desk and it allows you to create your own furniture or have someone make it for you.  Apparently there are lots of Pats all over the world who can make you your own art table, or whatever.  You could even take a stab at it yourself! 2014-05-22 09.06.15 Pretty cool, huh? 2014-05-22 09.06.44Oh and this is what the encaustic set up looks like.  Soon it will get too hot to work in my garage. 2014-05-19 09.13.04 Can't leave without a "shout out" to Baby Girl who has successfully concluded her high school career.  Onward and upward.  I'm so proud.  Next post we will get back to business, after my long weekend birthday celebration in the Keys where I will be doing this. 2013-06-29 10.21.29
