Sex Up your Kitchen with Matte Black

In the fashion world, black always has an air of hipness and sophistication, as in the ubiquitous "little black dress".  Now, in kitchens and home decor, matte black is all the rage, it's neutral but also works as a stunning accent when used sparingly.

Appliance manufacturers have been turning to black matte or something called black stainless as an alternative to the stainless steel finishes that have been a standard for so long. You can also opt to use matte black for your cabinet hardware and mix it in with stainless or chrome.  That's exactly what I did in my new sexy kitchen which will be revealed soon in Episode VIII of The Big Move.  This is a little preview

Check out my faucet, courtesy of Blanco, and I love it.  I cheated though, that is not my kitchen as the backsplash isn't in yet.  It will, however,  be very similar to the one you see above. Below IS a sneak peek.  Those are my luscious bamboo cabinets with quartz countertop featuring real shells! For more, you'll just have to wait for VIII.

(By the way, I have curated many of the items shown in this post on my new Amazon page. There is even a surprise "look for less" item included. In each future post, I will add more items to it.  Yes, I could possibly get coffee money from these links but I only post the products I either have or really love. I'm just curating them there for you.)

The more I thought about it, the more I saw black matte in art and nature too.  I encourage my clients to include images like these as they begin to consider options for a new kitchen or bath.  I'm fun like that ;) These are the things that make your space personal and reflect your style.  I will help you edit and translate the essence so that it works seamlessly in your new space.

I love this look as an alternative to stainless steel.  If you decide to be bold with black appliances, it's a good idea to buy the whole package so everything matches.  The black appliance finishes from different manufacturers are not all the same.  If you want to get a different brand dishwasher or refrigerator you can always put cabinet panels on them as another solution.

Many quartz countertop manufacturers are offering matte finishes. Above is Cambria's black matte as a backdrop to their mega-popular Brittanicca, also in matte finish. If you are thinking of doing a full height backsplash, as shown here, make sure to plan on using 2cm material which is 3/4" thick.  The other option of 3cm would be too thick.

Don't you love this pendant light fixture? I am enthralled with the streamlined cylindrical shape.  It's a series of nested and tiered cones that allow light to seep down in a cool way.  The outside is textured black and the inner surfaces are finished with hand-applied gold leaf.

The clean contemporary lines of this black matte kitchen faucet by Moen caught my attention. Note the matte finish on the countertop and how nicely the black matte works with the stainless sink.  You can definitely mix metals!

Kitchen Work Centers, the New "Triangle"

Whether you are a design professional or an educated homeowner you’ve probably heard the term “kitchen work triangle”. In fact it’s probably one of the first things you learn when endeavoring to create a new kitchen. Who thought this up? It is actually the result of a study made at the University of Illinois in the 1950s! If you’re wondering if it could be outdated, just think of how much kitchens have changed since then in terms of products, appliances and how we use them. The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) defines the kitchen “work triangle” an imaginary straight line drawn from the center of the sink, to the center of the cook top, to the center of the refrigerator and finally back to the sink.Speaking of TRIANGLES, I thought this was really artfulThe NKBA suggests the following guidelines for determining a work triangle:- The sum of the work triangle's three sides should not exceed 26 ft. and each leg should measure between 4 ft. and 9 ft.Triangle- The work triangle should not cut through an island or peninsula by more than 12 inches.- If the kitchen has only one sink, it should be placed between or across from the cooking surface, preparation area or refrigerator.Yes, this makes kitchen design sound a bit like solving a puzzle and, actually, it really is. I know my design is “right” when the layout works from every angle in terms of safety, ease of function and, of course, aesthetics.{29B28645-DCE3-4BC1-A625-A85A38654059}Img400Some of the design solution is just good sound common sense but much of it should be directed by the individual needs of the client. I don’t “do” the triangle as a rule. Today we have multiple cook kitchens and no end of possible appliances. Modern kitchens are so unlike those of 60 years ago, so I use the more updated concept of “work centers”. The basic ones are food prep, cooking, clean up and storage. The Pet Parlor concept can be built into your laundry or utility roomSo while efficiency is still at the forefront, the thinking is a bit more evolved to address twenty first century needs. In a perfect world, work centers should be situated to allow someone to work in one area without getting in the way of someone using another. However, let’s face it, in a very small kitchen that is just not going to happen! The focus then is twofold: enough storage and enough counter space.64a6706c99de3aa50964a366b524c19fThe types of work centers you can have is only limited by your imagination. Here are some good ones:-Beverage center- It can be coffee/tea, smoothies, wine or cocktails-Media center-It can be sit down area for menu planning, computer, charging station or TV-Baking center- You can trick this area out with customized storage for bake ware, bowls, utensils and a marble top for rolling dough. This baking center only comes out when you need it! Photo courtesty of BHGRemember that an “artful kitchen” employs what I call “practical creativity”. Function is the infrastructure, beauty comes next, the art is getting both just right.

Perfect Party Mix: Poggenpohl, Blanco and More

One of the most delightful experiences I had on the recent Modenus Blog Tour during Design and Construction Week in Las Vegas (which I'm sure you've all been following on social media) was a  penthouse cocktail party located in the Residences at Mandarin Oriental. Beautiful functional kitchens and baths, party penthouse in the sky, living sculpture, what a mix!!We toured three suites in the sky, more than forty floors up,  all featuring products by Blanco, Poggenpohl and Cosentino, makers of Silestone and Dekton.  These exclusive residences were host to private events for the press and the design community.Blanco, Poggenpohl, blogtourvegas, modenusThe theme of the evening was "The Art of Performance".  Products were complemented by elegant bronze sculptures by California-based contemporary figurative artist Richard MacDonald.Richard MacDonald, bronze, sculpture,ChasenWestPhotography, modenus, blogtourvegasWe also had living sculptures in the form of two very talented (and flexible) dancers.Richard MacDonald, Modenus, blogtourvegas, chasenwestphotographyBlanco's Precision Steel Art sinks were on show along with their edgy Culina faucets.  Incidentally this popular sink style comes in a 16" smaller size perfect for prep or bar sinks. Steel Art Precision Sink by Blanco It features angular lines, something really original and different from your standard stainless steel sink.Blanco, Residences at Mandarin Oriental, Modenus Blog Tour, #blogtourvegasI had the pleasure of interviewing the lovely Christy Emens, Communications and Marketing Manager of  Blanco. She touts "livable design" which is Blanco's version of personalization.  This involves not only a variety of sink and faucet sizes, but also accessories to add convenience in the kitchen. Blanco One, Blanco, kitchen sinks, culina faucetThe Blanco One is a bit larger but still compact, plus you can trick it out with all kinds of goodies.Back to the party, The Art of Performance is all about how kitchens and baths can be beautiful as well as functional and I think they proved their point.Cosentino, Dekton, Aura, blogtourvegas, modenusCosentino showcased their new Dekton color, Aura.  I love the continuous veining!A bit of penthous Poggenpohl. What could be better?Poggenpohl's design statement continues the theme of "personalization", a major trend at the show. Your kitchen should be a reflection of your lifestyle. As a 123 year old company, Poggenpohl was instrumental in the development of the first modern day kitchens.  The German company remains cutting edge in its design philosophy and use of materials.  In 2014 they introduced Poggenpohl P´7350 Design by Porsche, the latest incarnation by Porsche Design Studio.  The collection features a sleek new look achieved by the use of industrial mitering technology. Love!! PoggenpohlBack to the party.  Poggenpohl kitchen designer Anne Kramer, says  “Our vision is to personalize each kitchen to the homeowner’s needs for entertaining, for cooking, for storage and for lifestyle. Unlike traditional homes, these residences are at the height of the Las Vegas strip. A rarified atmosphere where anything is possible." I think they succeeded. Next up: The Big Show: KBIS Trend Recap

Royalty, New Beginnings and What's Going on in the Kitchen?

It’s Monday and a  little diversion is in order.  How about a bit of fun with the Royal Family? Little Prince Georgie isn’t the only new thing in the lives of Kate and Will.  They've just moved into new digs as well, Apartment 1A Kensington Palace to be exact.New baby, new life, new palace! Photo: Fox Business According to our friends at US Weekly, Kate’s been working on a massive renovation for the last 18 months or so, to the tune of one million pounds paid by taxpayers with another 500K, or so,  paid for by Will and Kate.    The update is said to include his and her baths as well as three state of the art kitchens! Kensington Palace under construction. Photo: Mirror NewsKate gets to peruse the antiques in the Royal Collection for her new home.  According to British news source The Daily Mail, Kate’s design selections are quintessentially English in sophisticated neutral shades but with a modern twist. Interesting to note that Kate has not availed herself of the services of a design professional and is overseeing the entire project (with the aid of her “small” staff) herself.I vote for this as English with a modern twist. It's by Smallbone of Devizes.Kitchens for Living wonders what exactly you might find The Royals doing in the kitchen.  Well I don’t know what "the palace" will be like but whilst in their last cozy house in Anglesey, Wales they were known to make lots of tea and toast.  Apparently Kate does know her way around the heart of the home and prepares an awesome roast chicken as well.  She’s also fond of preparing her own jams. Kitchen by RoundhouseIf you’re English and nothing but the best will do for your new kitchen head over to the area in and around Wigmore St. located in the exclusive West End London area.  It is here that  you will find the finest of British bespoke (custom) cabinetry including Roundhouse, Neville Johnson, Boffi  Bulthaup and more.  If you're in sunny South Florida like me you can still get your English on at Brendan Donovan Furniture & Cabinet Co. Poggenpohl, Ultimate Form and Function

Poggenpohl new ash wood veneerWhether your in the market for a new kitchen or you're in the business of selling kitchens one of the first questions that comes up is, “what’s your style?” Are you traditional, transitional or contemporary?  If the answer is contemporary, the elements to look for include seamless integration, totally efficient function and clean sleek lines.  These happen to be the standards at Poggenpohl, founded over 120 years ago as the first German kitchen brand and now  the best known kitchen brand in the world – present in more than 70 countries around the globe.  Poggenpohl can show you what true European contemporary design is all about.1892_01Today they continue to think outside the box (pun intended) to offer some of the   most cutting edge cabinetry in the industry.

The new +EDITION collection from Poggenpohl combines the best of both worlds, crisp clean white lacquer with warm natural walnut wood veneer.  It is available in flat panel or thin frame detail door styles. New black glass upper wall cabinets include the same thin frame details with finished interiors and LED lighting.Behind the scenes storage is also a Poggenpohl hallmark.  A wide range of  available drawer inserts can be customized to your needs.  These kitchens are not designed, they’re engineered!  This includes not only cabinets but thin counter tops, offered in glass or stone, and even integrated glass front cooking appliances!  One can be sure that their kitchens are as pleasurable to look at as they are to work in.  I also love that although the elements are integrated they seem to also stand alone as individual sculptural statements.  (Spoken like a true kitchen designer channeling her inner artist.)A tricked out backsplash eliminates counter clutterA modern European kitchen utilizes the easy to reach back splash area under the upper cabinets.  Other elements to notice include horizontal graining, mid-height cabinetry and a mix of texture and materials. I enjoyed learning about Poggenpohl and their design philosophy as a part of the Modenus Blog Tour New Orleans.Next up:  We’re gonna get steamy at KFL!  Adding luxury and health benefits to your bathing experience with Mr. Steam

Mad For Mid Century

A small mid century collage by yours truly. I call it "Embracing Routine". 6"by 6" by 2" canvasIf you're a Mid Century product of Florida, like me, you probably grew up in what's fondly known as a "ranch style house".  Our friends over at Wikipedia define the ranch abode as " a domestic architectural style  originating in the United States. The ranch house is noted for its long, close-to-the-ground profile, and minimal use of exterior and interior decoration. The houses fuse modernist ideas and styles with notions of the American Western period working ranches to create a very informal and casual living style."   In addition to the above, the Florida ranch house  usually came in pastel colors with what we call a "Florida room".  This is kind of like a family room with lots of windows.

Although not as grand as the house above, my childhood home shared several elements.  Our Florida Room ceiling had a similar wood treatment and it also had a stone feature wall.  We had lots of green and brown and that EXACT furniture.  The authentic flooring would have been terrazzo, like ours.  I never knew it was cool then but now it's all the rage.  Think about it, there are lots of these houses still around!  Mid-Century has firmly established its niche in design history and has left its mark on our culture.  We've got MadMen, Modernism Magazine, the website Atomic Ranch and numerous blogs. MOD_CVRIf you're looking for that 50s vibe in the kitchen, keep it simple.  Door styles were just flat and were either a warm wood finish or painted.  Guess what? Wall ovens with a separate cook top were much more common in the typical Mid Century kitchen.  Today most homes have ranges.1950s ad for Caloric ovens (bad name, huh?) atomicpattern2Throw in a little atomic patterning and you're there.  If you are really embracing this you can get the vintage look for your refrigerator.elmira_lg(2)Elmira Stove Works has introduced the latest addition to its retro Northstar collection, the French-door refrigerator.  By combining iconic 1950s-style with the modern amenities of contemporary appliances, this new model is larger capacity than previously available in the line.  It comes in a full-depth model as well as counter-depth.  You don't have to get red.  It comes in nine standard colors OR you can even get it custom-colored (for a price, I'm sure).
