Going Topless...In Your Kitchen

Unless you've been living under a rock you know that the less-is-more look of the topless kitchen is hot!! When I say topless I mean no upper cabinets. There are certainly pluses and minuses to this design decision. But "how can I live without half my kitchen", you ask.  Fear not. Today we will examine the possibilities.

Less is Now

No complaining if you haven't done a thorough kitchen purge in the last year.  We all have "stuff" and if it never sees the light of day it's stagnant energy taking up real estate that could be otherwise useful or beautiful. But what about dishes? They always go in the upper cabinets. Actually, dishes work perfectly in drawers if you have this drawer peg system.  You'll find that they're easier to access too, particularly if you're short like me ;)

Clever Corners

Another way to maximize the space you have below deck is to use the corner space.  My favorite way to do this is with a base lazy susan cabinet. It's versatile storage for almost anything. Just be sure to get this type, without the pole.  With trays mounted on shelves, you won't lose things to the Twilight Zone if they fall over.  (Chrome rails are optional) The only caveat is that you will need 36" on both sides of the corner to make this work.

If you can't swing the 36" in each direction you can perhaps use the Cloud which fits in a blind corner cabinet.  We can discuss more when you call me to help you with your new kitchen.

Ultimate Simplicity

The most simple solution of all is the open shelf.  They are both feared and widely popular.  Some feel like it would look way too messy but I say it doesn't have to be all or nothing.  A few open or floating shelves can add a lot of lightness and visual interest as well as storage above the counter in lieu of cabinets.

Artful Arrangement

In the photo below, they actually did not eliminate uppers entirely but it feels like it.  Here they are using the shortened uppers for remote storage, i.e. the stuff you don't need to access every day. The "go to" storage is in tall pantry cabinets.  That's right, you don't have to use the pantry only for food, they are great for everything.  If your pantry is full depth, like these, rollouts work great for easy access and to avoid items getting lost in the back. If you're observant you'll also notice the last cabinet sits on top of the counter.  If you have the counter space this is a great way to conceal countertop items for less clutter.

Creative Compromise

As we've seen, one does not necessarily need to banish the upper cabinet entirely to score an updated and functional result.  Here is a loft kitchen I recently designed.  My clients were in love with the idea of floating shelves and this look worked for their urban vintage style. Since space was at a premium in this condo we did opt to keep a few good sized upper cabinets.  The look is actually a blend of contemporary and transitional. A full pantry also would've worked to the right of the refrigerator but my clients preferred this arrangement which is very symetrical and offers a bit of extra counter space.  Hey, I always say the best jobs are good collaborations. :)

Summer, the Season for Outside Cabinets

Summer is in full swing! I must confess I'm one of the few who loves a hot steamy Florida summer.  Recently I got a call from a potential client with some extra space to fill outside by the pool (lucky them right?) Adjacent to the dining room and tucked into an alcove a new idea sprang to mind!  How about an outside wine bar? Perfect for entertaining and here in Florida we can enjoy this scenario most of the year.  There are a few things to remember if you're thinking of investing in outsider cabinetry.outside winebar The Right Stuff-  Cabinets for the outside should be exterior grade, ready to stand up to humidity and temperature changes.  Some good options include Mahogany, Cypress and Teak.  These can be pricey, especially the latter two but there are other options.  Why not consider a painted finish? As long as you're using an exterior grade paint over and exterior quality MDF you're set! Your friendly local custom cabinet maker can help you with any of these options. IMG_1992  There are also cabinet lines that are manufactured for the outdoors.  Danver Stainless Outdoor Kitchens makes powder coated stainless steel cabinetry for barbecues, outside kitchens and, yes, outdoor wine bars!!  They tout their all powder coat finishes for low maintenance, protection from harsh weather conditions and a safeguard  form chlorine (salt air) and muriatic acid which is used to clean pavers. 13719637_1024295714291438_3451241128416805963_o We say "outside" but I recommend your bar area  have at least an overhead cover.  You gotta protect the goods, right? Protected or not, perhaps the most durable way to go is with a product called King StarBoard® ST.    It is a special, high-density polyethylene sheet that provides a super tough surface for many applications.  I like that it comes in colors and that color goes all the way through, no chipping ever!66cac045-583d-4457-b26b-a681aea2c6fa Handle It Properly- All unavoidably metal elements such as door/drawer pulls, hinges and drawer slides should be stainless steel. This also your sink and faucet.  Here's a great article full of tips on choosing the right products for the outdoors from plumbing and appliance experts at Ferguson.Top if Off- There are actually a number of good counter options for your outside area.  Concrete is one of them and it can be colored and even embedded with things like shells and rocks!  Fun right? You can embed mementos right into the concrete! Courtesy of milestoneconcrete.comI also love Dekton by Cosentino, a highly durable scientifically complicated package of counter top loveliness.  Just have a look at these new colors!Dekton tops are impervious to weather with zero porousity!Back to my client, here's what I envision for this space (at top).  The stone wall lends a wine cellar feel while being totally suitable for this outside application.  Here I'm showing the stone also on the adjoining wall but it would work equally well only over the bar. Last but not least, favorite art makes it your own with a personal touch.  Just make sure your work is framed professionally so moisture doesn't enter into the picture, so to speak.  If you'd like to explore creating your own little slice of heaven outside I'd love to help you.  You know where to find me ;) Cheers and happy summer!

Perfect Party Mix: Poggenpohl, Blanco and More

One of the most delightful experiences I had on the recent Modenus Blog Tour during Design and Construction Week in Las Vegas (which I'm sure you've all been following on social media) was a  penthouse cocktail party located in the Residences at Mandarin Oriental. Beautiful functional kitchens and baths, party penthouse in the sky, living sculpture, what a mix!!We toured three suites in the sky, more than forty floors up,  all featuring products by Blanco, Poggenpohl and Cosentino, makers of Silestone and Dekton.  These exclusive residences were host to private events for the press and the design community.Blanco, Poggenpohl, blogtourvegas, modenusThe theme of the evening was "The Art of Performance".  Products were complemented by elegant bronze sculptures by California-based contemporary figurative artist Richard MacDonald.Richard MacDonald, bronze, sculpture,ChasenWestPhotography, modenus, blogtourvegasWe also had living sculptures in the form of two very talented (and flexible) dancers.Richard MacDonald, Modenus, blogtourvegas, chasenwestphotographyBlanco's Precision Steel Art sinks were on show along with their edgy Culina faucets.  Incidentally this popular sink style comes in a 16" smaller size perfect for prep or bar sinks. Steel Art Precision Sink by Blanco It features angular lines, something really original and different from your standard stainless steel sink.Blanco, Residences at Mandarin Oriental, Modenus Blog Tour, #blogtourvegasI had the pleasure of interviewing the lovely Christy Emens, Communications and Marketing Manager of  Blanco. She touts "livable design" which is Blanco's version of personalization.  This involves not only a variety of sink and faucet sizes, but also accessories to add convenience in the kitchen. Blanco One, Blanco, kitchen sinks, culina faucetThe Blanco One is a bit larger but still compact, plus you can trick it out with all kinds of goodies.Back to the party, The Art of Performance is all about how kitchens and baths can be beautiful as well as functional and I think they proved their point.Cosentino, Dekton, Aura, blogtourvegas, modenusCosentino showcased their new Dekton color, Aura.  I love the continuous veining!A bit of penthous Poggenpohl. What could be better?Poggenpohl's design statement continues the theme of "personalization", a major trend at the show. Your kitchen should be a reflection of your lifestyle. As a 123 year old company, Poggenpohl was instrumental in the development of the first modern day kitchens.  The German company remains cutting edge in its design philosophy and use of materials.  In 2014 they introduced Poggenpohl P´7350 Design by Porsche, the latest incarnation by Porsche Design Studio.  The collection features a sleek new look achieved by the use of industrial mitering technology. Love!! PoggenpohlBack to the party.  Poggenpohl kitchen designer Anne Kramer, says  “Our vision is to personalize each kitchen to the homeowner’s needs for entertaining, for cooking, for storage and for lifestyle. Unlike traditional homes, these residences are at the height of the Las Vegas strip. A rarified atmosphere where anything is possible." I think they succeeded. Next up: The Big Show: KBIS Trend Recap

Hot Trends Make a Big Splash at KBIS 2014

As many of you know, the Kitchen and Bath masses gathered in Las Vegas February 4-6 for their annual pilgrimage to KBIS, the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show. This year the event was part of Design & Construction Week, a new concept, merging KBIS with IBS, the International Builder’s Show. As a result, it was bigger and better than ever. Let’s hope that what happened there does NOT stay there !Kitchen-by-Marie-Claire-Reimann-3-600x400Maybe I should limit that to kitchen and bath industry products and trends ;)   Uber interior design resource Modenus hosted their latest Blogtour group who covered the event in a big way! You can get the entire scoop here.So what is trending, you may ask? Here’s the latest scoop from Kitchen & Bath Design News and KBIS co-sponsors, the National Kitchen & Bath Association:loox-led-in-drawerLet there be light.  Yes we’re used to lights in the refrigerator but now we’re adding LED lighting to cabinetry as well.

Make that matte.  Last year I noticed a growing interest in matte finishes and it’s even more so this year.  One such surface is the new Dekton by Cosentino.  It's an ultra compact surface including quartz, porcelain and glass.  This makes it perfect for both indoor and outdoor use, even better than quartz as it's UV resistant and can withstand extreme heat.

Keep it simple.   NKBA President John Petrie, CMKBDT tells us, "while transitional styles are still number one, we see kitchen design trending more contemporary this year, with clean , simple lines: less clutter and little ornamentation".Quartz rocks, especially if it’s patterned!  Homeowners have discovered quartz but they're not willing to give up the pattern and movement found in natural stone products like granite and marble.  New finishes by Cambria let you have the best of both worlds.Shirebrook from The Waterstone Collection by Cambria Cambria's  Waterstone Collection captures the depth and beauty of marble and granite while offering the superior strength and performance of quartz. (Here's something for you "traditionalists", they clearly didn't get the message about contemporary in this kitchen!)Gadgets, gadgets, gadgets, We may like our cabinetry look pared down but gimme the gadgets!  Technology reigns, ie anything  touch operated or digital.Temp20 Technology by Delta wins Best in Bath AwardThe new Temp20 Technology by Delta Faucets boasts a digital temperature display that saves you the shock or injury from water that's not the temperature you were expecting.   When the temperature is less than 80 degrees the LED display will glow blue.  It's magenta from 80-110 and red when it's above that.  You can get this feature on your Delta faucet  this spring.Home spa system by Mr. SteamA bath to come home to, trends in the bathroom focus on customization and spa ambiance.  In  the high end markets, free standing tubs are all the rage.  They are functional and sculptural at the same time. We are also understanding the benefits of hydrotherapy as in soaking tubs and steam baths.Additional features you may want to include in your new kitchens and baths include the following:-Induction cooktops (and now ranges too!)-Steam ovens-French-door refrigerators (duh, I think we all know that already!)-Bottom freezer drawers (ditto of above)-Touch activated faucets-Electronic (no touch) faucets-LED lighting-Charging stations-Pet stationsI believe all of the above are here to stay, at least in the foreseeable future, and the technology will only get better.
