5 Elements of an Artful Kitchen

Summer projects are underway in South Florida!  In fact, it's the height of the busy season for most design professionals here.

I don't have to tell you that a new kitchen is a big investment, in fact the kitchen is the most expensive renovation you're ever likely to undertake. It stands to reason that you'd want a kitchen that is tailor-made for you whether you can afford custom or not. This is what we're all about at Artful Kitchens.

Flawless function behind the scenes from Poggenpohl

The concept of an "artful kitchen" has many different facets.  It is not just about budget or the amount of space you have but the skill you employ using what is available to you. Here are five tips to consider along with some visual inspiration featuring products I saw this year at the Kitchen & Bath Industry (KBIS) trade show in Las Vegas. Implement these with style and confidence and you will be the proud owner of an artful kitchen!

1. Flawless Function

I'm all about artistic expression but a major part of creativity in the kitchen comes from devising flawless function. This quality is not something you see but something you can experience if artfully accomplished.  When I say function, I mean work centers comprised of cooking, clean up and food prep areas.Steve Jobs quote

Those are the basics but you could have more such as a beverage center (think coffee, tea, wine), a computer station or a baking center.  If you have a two-cook kitchen, your layout should be designed so that any one of the major functions can be performed without anyone getting underfoot.

Precis sink by Blanco

Following the guidelines set by the NKBA is a must to make sure all clearances are adequate. Sometimes we don't have a lot of choice about where to locate our sink or appliances but we can organize our utensils, dishes, pots and food items in a more efficient way.  Don't forget the more flawlessly your kitchen functions the safer it is. You don't have to be an expert at this, just think about how you use your kitchen so that you will be a good collaborator when it comes time to work with a professional.

2. Personalization

This is, without a doubt, the biggest movement in the design world.  An artful kitchen is your own personal statement customized to the way you live.  It could be a steam oven because healthy eating is your passion or it could be a lovely furniture piece with glass doors to display your grandmother's china. Include the colors you love.  Even though you must be mindful of your budget (everyone has one), strive to retain the essence of what you see as your dream kitchen.

3. Harmony

Harmony is one of the principles of design and a must for your kitchen.  Whenever I design a two-toned kitchen I like to ensure that different finishes and details are carried through the space to create a cohesive whole.  It's about how the floor relates to the cabinets and  how the cabinet hardware relates to the faucet. You get the picture!  It does not mean that everything has to match perfectly, it means elements should relate to and complement each other. It also does not mean that every element has to be perfectly symmetrical.  In fact, consider this permission NOT to be! I find that the best rule of thumb is to follow the architecture and style of the home you're in.  If, for example, the kitchen window is way off center you should work with that not against it.  Never force solutions by sacrificing function.

4. Focal Point

Every piece of great artwork has a focal point.  It is the "star of the show", so to speak.  In a kitchen it can be a sculptural range hood, a granite counter with big bold movement or actually a piece of art! It is the item that makes you say WOW when you enter the kitchen.  Just remember less is more here.  One great focal point is probably enough.  Too much and the statement gets lost. Less is definitely more.

5. Texture

The element of texture involves at least two of our senses, touch and sight.  The textures you are likely to come across include the glossy finishes popular in contemporary design, prominent wood grains which can be traditional or modern and smooth honed surfaces that are more matte.  A flat slab cabinet door is a great choice if you plan to use a wood with a lot of pattern and graining.  In this case the material is the decorative element of the cabinet.  On the other hand, if you are traditional and you are using white cabinets you can select a door with some molding or detail.  Also let the wild patterns either be on your cabinets or on your counter, both would be busy and distracting.

One Bachelor's Kitchen Makeover

So you need a new kitchen. Let the dreams commence! We read all about the ubiquitous “dream kitchen”. The gorgeous kitchen above may be found on Houzz.com and features cabinets by Holiday Kitchens. Sorry if you thought it was the after shot. Sadly, it is not but I think you'll agree that we made a huge improvement. To be sure the heart of the home is the most expensive room in the house to remodel so how much do you need to do? Do you need to reinvent the wheel to be happy? I say no.

Take a look at this typical example.  This kitchen is in a classic Florida ranch style, 3 bedroom 2 bath abode circa 1978. The Before Do you think it needed a new kitchen?  Here’s the scenario:  The owner is a bachelor with a teen-aged daughter who lives with him part-time.  It’s a small kitchen.  We’re not changing the flooring and you don't have to.  Just remember to make sure that new cabinets will cover the old "foot print" of the kitchen.  Your installer should shim cabinets, as needed, so everything's nice and level.  Basically this client was due for fresh new cabinets, tops and appliances.  He actually likes to cook and his favorite appliance is his GE Advantium Speedcook Microwave Oven, so much so he wants two!  Oh, and he wants a cabinet that is easy to access from the porch because he grills a lot.  We used Holiday Kitchens for the cabinetry (same resource used for the gorgeousness at the top of the page). Simple, clean and fresh Here's that handy BBQ cabinet. The new little peninsula also gives him a little more work surface. You may know Holiday Kitchens for their higher end custom cabinets but they also offer a really good quality cabinet in a middle-of-the-road price point.  Laminate tops were replaced with durable granite by Stone Palace and we fit that extra microwave in a tall cabinet with pantry storage above and below. Nothing crazy just nice and new.Next up: Can healthy chips taste good? We had fun finding out!

SOMETIMES LESS IS MORE IN KITCHEN DESIGN

I'm loving this kitchen featured on thekitchn.com.  Looks like she's having way too much fun, huh?  Of course I can't help noticing the design. (Maybe that's what she's so happy about.)  There is a great idea here.   Open space.   In this case there is a window in the way which does not allow for an upper cabinet.   Even if the window was 15" or so further to the left that corner area is very difficult to reach.   One solution is to put open shelves there or, nothing!   It's okay to have some open spaces in the kitchen when they make sense.   It can even create an opportunity for art, which is always a good thing! If you'd like to read about these hip-home-owning-kitchen-lovers click here.

SMALL KITCHENS, BIG SOLUTIONS

Sometimes we just can't contain ourselves, or at least the contents of our kitchens.  If you're someone who's love for kitchen living  is at odds with an undersized space you're reading the right blog.  Did you know small kitchens can be a good thing?  For example if you've organized efficiently you can work with more efficiency, taking less steps and with less movement than someone doing the same task in more spacious quarters.  That being said, there's no denying that a few tricks are needed to achieve that high function.  Here's what I recommend:
-Maximize the interior storage that you do have.  Even older cabinets can be outfitted with roll out shelves or inserts to help you get into blind corners.
These roll outs are an old trick that works!
My clients love this blind corner cabinet accessory!
-Look up.  Do you have unused space above your cabinets?  Although it's not handy for everyday it could be a great place for what I call "remote storage".  Get those Halloween decorations up and out of the way to free up the prime real estate in your kitchen.  How about using some interesting containers to add a little visual interest over your cabinets while you're at it?  Remember, remote storage doesn't even have to be in the kitchen at all but wherever you have a bit of room.

-Focus on the function.  If you have a small kitchen you have to pick a focus and approach everything towards that purpose.  If it's for cooking then anything not related to cooking must be gone.  Sorry but that means the junk drawer, your bills (who wants to look at those anyway?), your meds and whatever else that doesn't fit your main purpose.
-Clear the decks.  If you have limited counter space think about what you can put away or up in a cabinet.  A general rule of thumb is if you don't use it everyday put it away.
-Open shelves are also great for items you use daily, or almost daily.  They make items easy to find and reach.  Dust is not a worry if you're using these items all the time.  Open shelving also creates a more open spacious feeling.
-See the light.  White is IN (and never really goes out of style in the kitchen.)  Use it along with cleverly placed mirrors and lots of lighting.
If you have a tiny dining area in your tiny kitchen make sure you're using armless chairs.  Clear lucite is back and it's a great modern furniture choice that practically disappears!  Last but not least, add a dramatic hanging light fixture to draw the eye up.
