The Big Move: Episode 8 The Big Reveal

Yes, it certainly has been a while since our last episode but guess what? The Big Move is complete and it's time for THE BIG REVEAL. We are done for the most part.  I guess the truth is the homeowner is really never done.

There's always something, right? Anyway, we are enjoying our new home immensely and in this episode I will give you a tour of the kitchen, show you some of the of the work we've been up to since we met last, share some final words of wisdom and then THE BIG REVEAL!!! Going Topless...In Your Kitchen

Unless you've been living under a rock you know that the less-is-more look of the topless kitchen is hot!! When I say topless I mean no upper cabinets. There are certainly pluses and minuses to this design decision. But "how can I live without half my kitchen", you ask.  Fear not. Today we will examine the possibilities.

Less is Now

No complaining if you haven't done a thorough kitchen purge in the last year.  We all have "stuff" and if it never sees the light of day it's stagnant energy taking up real estate that could be otherwise useful or beautiful.But what about dishes? They always go in the upper cabinets. Actually, dishes work perfectly in drawers if you have this drawer peg system.  You'll find that they're easier to access too, particularly if you're short like me ;)

Clever Corners

Another way to maximize the space you have below deck is to use the corner space.  My favorite way to do this is with a base lazy susan cabinet. It's versatile storage for almost anything. Just be sure to get this type, without the pole.  With trays mounted on shelves, you won't lose things to the Twilight Zone if they fall over.  (Chrome rails are optional) The only caveat is that you will need 36" on both sides of the corner to make this work.

If you can't swing the 36" in each direction you can perhaps use the Cloud which fits in a blind corner cabinet.  We can discuss more when you call me to help you with your new kitchen.

Ultimate Simplicity

The most simple solution of all is the open shelf.  They are both feared and widely popular.  Some feel like it would look way too messy but I say it doesn't have to be all or nothing.  A few open or floating shelves can add a lot of lightness and visual interest as well as storage above the counter in lieu of cabinets.

Artful Arrangement

In the photo below, they actually did not eliminate uppers entirely but it feels like it.  Here they are using the shortened uppers for remote storage, i.e. the stuff you don't need to access every day. The "go to" storage is in tall pantry cabinets.  That's right, you don't have to use the pantry only for food, they are great for everything.  If your pantry is full depth, like these, rollouts work great for easy access and to avoid items getting lost in the back. If you're observant you'll also notice the last cabinet sits on top of the counter.  If you have the counter space this is a great way to conceal countertop items for less clutter.

Creative Compromise

As we've seen, one does not necessarily need to banish the upper cabinet entirely to score an updated and functional result.  Here is a loft kitchen I recently designed.  My clients were in love with the idea of floating shelves and this look worked for their urban vintage style. Since space was at a premium in this condo we did opt to keep a few good sized upper cabinets.  The look is actually a blend of contemporary and transitional. A full pantry also would've worked to the right of the refrigerator but my clients preferred this arrangement which is very symetrical and offers a bit of extra counter space.  Hey, I always say the best jobs are good collaborations. :)

Sex Up your Kitchen with Matte Black

In the fashion world, black always has an air of hipness and sophistication, as in the ubiquitous "little black dress".  Now, in kitchens and home decor, matte black is all the rage, it's neutral but also works as a stunning accent when used sparingly.   

Appliance manufacturers have been turning to black matte or something called black stainless as an alternative to the stainless steel finishes that have been a standard for so long. You can also opt to use matte black for your cabinet hardware and mix it in with stainless or chrome.  That's exactly what I did in my new sexy kitchen which will be revealed soon in Episode VIII of The Big Move.  This is a little preview

Check out my faucet, courtesy of Blanco, and I love it.  I cheated though, that is not my kitchen as the backsplash isn't in yet.  It will, however,  be very similar to the one you see above. Below IS a sneak peek.  Those are my luscious bamboo cabinets with quartz countertop featuring real shells! For more, you'll just have to wait for VIII.

The more I thought about it, the more I saw black matte in art and nature too.  I encourage my clients to include images like these as they begin to consider options for a new kitchen or bath.  I'm fun like that ;) These are the things that make your space personal and reflect your style.  I will help you edit and translate the essence so that it works seamlessly in your new space.

I love this look as an alternative to stainless steel.  If you decide to be bold with black appliances, it's a good idea to buy the whole package so everything matches.  The black appliance finishes from different manufacturers are not all the same.  If you want to get a different brand dishwasher or refrigerator you can always put cabinet panels on them as another solution.

Many quartz countertop manufacturers are offering matte finishes. Above is Cambria's black matte as a backdrop to their mega-popular Brittanicca, also in matte finish. If you are thinking of doing a full height backsplash, as shown here, make sure to plan on using 2cm material which is 3/4" thick.  The other option of 3cm would be too thick.

Don't you love this pendant light fixture? I am enthralled with the streamlined cylindrical shape.  It's a series of nested and tiered cones that allow light to seep down in a cool way.  The outside is textured black and the inner surfaces are finished with hand-applied gold leaf. 

The clean contemporary lines of this black matte kitchen faucet by Moen caught my attention. Note the matte finish on the countertop and how nicely the black matte works with the stainless sink.  You can definitely mix metals!

Last but definitely not least, think how stylish you'll feel throughout the holidays cooking with this sleek chic mixer by KitchenAid. What do you think about the look and versatility of matte black? The Big Move- Part IV The Vision Takes Shape

Yes, it's been two weeks since Part III!! I can hardly believe how the time is flying and how S-L-O-W things are moving at the condo.  Nevertheless, we soldier on and today's episode is extra extra since I owe you.  If you need to catch up, here are Parts I & II and Part III.

In this episode, I talk about my flooring choice, the living plan, paint colors and some changes we had to make in the kitchen.  There are LOTS of tips and pointers that you can use yourself.  In addition to that, Joe edited this one so you'll be able to enjoy his pithy commentary on screen, as I talk, as well as more of his NEW original music. The New Farmhouse Kitchen

If you're a die-hard traditionalist the trend towards contemporary and transitional design may leave you feeling lost for fresh new inspiration in the familiar classic look you love, but no more!

As they say, everything old is new again and that couldn't be more true for Traditional design. If you yearn for that farmhouse feel you're right in step with what's going on in the design world right now.  Today's country kitchen has been reinvented with design details that reflect the cleaner lines and stepped-up function of today with the welcoming warmth you want.  Here's how you can update without selling the farm.

New Direction for Paneling

Traditional beadboard runs vertically.  It's called beadboard because in between each plank there is this detail which is called a bead in molding lingo.

The new look is called shiplap and it goes horizontal instead of vertically for a fresh new interpretation.  For a cleaner look, you can even remove the bead and have a v-groove or a nickel sized space between planks.  This works for coastal looks too since it's actually inspired by ship design details, thus the name shiplap.

Aprons Rule

Apron sinks, also called farmhouse sinks, are all the rage and they come in a large variety of materials from the original cast iron and clay to the newer stainless steel and granite composite versions.  They can also be under mounted so you can wipe those crumbs right off the counter and into the sink. Don't overlap the sink edge though or you'll have a concealed seam underneath between sink and counter that can get pretty gross and be hard to clean.

Less is More

One of the hallmarks of a traditional farmhouse kitchen is lots of moldings, legs, bun feet etc. It used to be the more the merrier but that has changed.  You can still have your legs and even corbels but they are simplified and clean lined.  Speaking of clean, these less detailed versions of the originals are much easier to keep clean.  Less detail can also be easier on the wallet. Win win!

Time for Recess

Attractive and innovative framed doors are the perfect choice for the new farmhouse kitchen and we are seeing flat recessed panel doors as a popular alternative to the traditional raised panel styles.  In fact simply switching from a raised panel door to what we call a flat panel door is an instant update.  If you want to take it even further consider a flat, or slab drawer front which allows you complete freedom when it comes to selecting your pulls or knobs.

a Warm and Rustic Feel to Any Room features easy DIY projects for all parts of your home. The Farmhouse: New Inspiration for the Classic American Home has great examples how to add updated farmhouse details to new or existing homes.  Last but not least City Farmhouse Style: Designs for a Modern Country Life is my personal favorite as it adds a touch of sophistication that could make your farmhouse look totally at home in city or country. Now for the Cow

Art can also be a style defining element of your kitchen. Nothing says farmhouse like the quintessential cow.  Are you cow A, or are you the more minimalist modern version that is cow B ?

Tear Sheet Tuesday: Wine Storage

Welcome to another edition of the occasional series I call Tear Sheet Tuesday.   If you want to catch up you can do that right here  and here.  In a nutshell, I tear what strikes my fancy and I share that with you here.  It could really be anything. It’s all about what inspires me.

Now I'm all inspired to share with you some tips and ideas for storing your liquid treasure, wine! Here are some things to keep in mind along with some wine storage eye candy curated just for you. 

Climate Control

If you want to be technical about it wine should be stored at the perfect temperature with a touch of humidity.  The sweet spot for white wines is about 45 degrees Fahrenheit.  I'll admit it, I love an ice cold glass of white wine but my preference may be costing me when it comes to flavor.  Your refrigerator, by the way, is probably chilling in the thirties.  It is often said that red wine is served and stored at room temperature.  That could be true if you live in northern France but they definitely don't mean Florida!  The room temperature they refer to is 55 degrees Fahrenheit.  Sunlight and heat are deadly enemies of the vino. Many people store wine in the kitchen but that's not necessarily the best place for it.  If you do store it there, make sure to keep it out of the sun, away from heat and anything that is going to cause vibration, no matter how subtle.  There is an abundance of wine cooler appliances on the market in price ranges from the hundreds to several thousand dollars.  Call me for a wine cooler consult to make sure you get one that fits and will work in accordance with specifications. 

Sideways is Not Just a Movie 

Wine is traditionally stored sideways to keep corks from drying out BUT if you're going to drink it soon it doesn't really matter. I'm sure you've noticed a lot of wine these days doesn't even come with a cork.  That used to be anathema to a wine aficionado but no more. Increasingly, winemakers "prefer screw caps for white wines and reds meant to be drunk young," says Dave McIntyre, a wine writer whose columns appear in The Washington Post. For more on the cork vs screw top check out this interesting article. One big benefit of storing sideways is storage, it makes the most efficient use of space.

Clever or Kitchy?  You Decide

Looks like a great idea to me, anything that suggests books and includes wine is a win!

Breaking with Tradition

I'm not a traditional gal and am one to prefer interesting asymmetric balance but there's just something about the perfect symmetry and classicism of this that rocks my world.  I am not alone.  This image has 5400 saves on Pinterest!

A Spot for Wine

If you're planning a new kitchen and you find yourself with an extra six inches you've got a spot for wine.  Notice it's insulated from the ovens by a decently sized pantry cabinet away from heat.  It's also not too close the window.

Retrofit Your Wine

This wine storage system by Wine Logic can be inserted into your existing cabinetry.  Sounds logical to me!
